Rumor Mill Grinds Away
Overheard in the Jack London District...
The Jack London Inn was recently sold and rumor has it that the new owners are going to tear it down and put in an 8-story condo building. Talk about adding to the Embarcadero Wall... although I guess it will provide the residents with some cool echos to keep the ear plug companies in biz.
Remember the project that was long ago approved for 2nd & Broadway (really 3rd & Broadway)? Well, the original developer went away and now the project is in someone else's hands. But here's the funny part: no one ever got extensions on the planning approvals, so now it has to go back to the planning commission. Here's the not-so-funny part: now they want to build it bigger by taking over more land - via eminent domain. Grr! I can't think of a more pathetic use of imminent domain.
Noise, noise, noise pollution. Harleys? Hate 'em. Boom boom base stereo's converted into autos? Hate 'em. Apparently Sierra Condo residents know something the rest of us don't. I heard that they were able to get the police to give citations and even managed to get a few of the overly loud motorcycles towed away. Anyone ask the police to check their own motorcycles?
Local cleaners clean up their act! Same name, but new owners have taken over Red Hanger Kleaners. Perhaps it's time to give them another chance...
Allegro sent tenants in their A & B buildings (the block between 2nd & 3rd Streets at Jackson) flyers saying that they were doing due diligence in looking at turning those two buildings into condos. My follow-up source says that the chances are relatively small that it would actually happen, but you never know... too bad they won't turn 240 3rd St into a condo building. That building needs the most love in terms of aesthetics.
I heard Girl's Night is making a comeback. Keep your eyes peeled here for more info. I'll post it as it becomes official. Movie night would be another good thing to bring back. We're taking suggestions at movienight@jacklondonnews.com. I'm also up for another twilight kayak night before it gets dark too early and too cold. Send email to kayak@jacklondonnews.com if you are interested.
Is everyone signed up to receive announcements from the Jack London District? Keep in touch with what's going on by sending email to announcements@jlda.org. (cool new URL!)
Got news you want to share with the rest of the Jack London District? Obviously this site needs to be updated more often and we're begging for others to write about happenings here in the neighborhood. Send your story submissions to editor@jacklondonnews.com.
Cheers,
The Editor.
