Do you know a good neighbor?
The Port of Oakland is currently seeking nominations for its 2005 Good Neighbor Awards. If you have a nomination for any of the categories:
- Person of the Year
- Student of the Year (K-12)
- Non-profit of the Year
- Port Tenant of the Year
The award ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 11 8:00 am to 9:30 am at our local Jack London Aquatic Center (115 Embarcadero West Oakland, CA)

Oakland Waterfront Trail implementation open house
Members of the community are invited to attend the open house event that is being held to show off designs for various projects along the Bay Trail as it passes through the Oakland Waterfront. Projects on show are:
- 66th Avenue Gateway
- Derby Avenue to Lancaster Street trail segment
- Alameda Avenue trail segment
- Cryer Site Park at Embarcadero and Dennison Street
- Bridge crossing proposals at High Street, Fruitvale Avenue and Park Street

Pedestrian fatality at Oak and 880-S intersection
There was a fatal accident this morning involving a pedestrian and semi at the Oak and 880S on-ramp (by the Shell gas station). According to a police officer at the scene a semi driver hit the pedestrian and then left the scene without stoping. A local TV report this morning said the pedestrian was an elderly man.
Update 02/08: The victim was 84-year old Homer Leong who lived locally at the Portobello condominiums at Embarcadero & Oak. Leong was a long time resident and retired business owner in Oakland. The driver of the semi who did not stop was traced and claimed he did not know he had hit anyone, he is currently under arrest. The full story is given in the Oakland Tribune.
